VSA Partners is very well known for their work for client Harley Davidson, but also as a top-notch Annual Report design firm. A few years ago, they did the entire Chicago Board of Trade annual report in Cooper Black. Dana Arnett claims he intentionally used the typeface BECAUSE he despised it; he wanted to do something really great with something bad.
The AR was a huge success, winning many awards and more importantly meeting the needs of the audience in a very effective and aesthetic manner.
Don't be too quick to rule out using even "bad" typefaces. A great designer can always make chicken salad out of chicken shit.
